Habitat Restoration Department
The goal of the Habitat Restoration Department is to develop and implement projects in the Columbia River estuary that restore historic estuarine and floodplain habitat types. In doing so, these projects re-establish tidal estuarine processes and ecology, benefiting a diversity of estuarine-dependent species like threatened and endangered salmonids. CREST projects have included dike breaches, stream realignment, small dam removal, fish passage improvement and riparian enhancements. Project ideas are typically inspired by local watershed councils, members of the community, or the restoration goals of our partner funding agencies. These projects always take into account community support and concerns, as well as precise engineering and modeling.
In addition, CREST is a resource to member jurisdictions for compensatory mitigation opportunities, on the ground project design, construction and monitoring.
