McKenzie Hatchery        oregonflag.gif (9576 bytes)

Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife

McKenzie Hatchery is operated by the State of Oregon, Dept. of Fish & Wildlife  and is located in western Oregon, 22 miles east of Eugene. The McKenzie River originates in the Cascade Range  and empties into the Willamette River which flows northward into the Columbia River.

The McKenzie Hatchery was constructed in 1938 and has been in operation since that time.  The hatchery facilities were rebuilt in 1975 with the cooperation and funding of the US Army Corps of Engineers as mitigation for loss of spawning grounds after the construction of flood control dams at Blue River and Cougar on the upper McKenzie River.

The primary mission of the McKenzie Hatchery is the rearing and releasing of nearly 1.2  million Spring Chinook Salmon each year.

It is our intention to provide a brief overview of our facility and to explain the life cycle of one species of Pacific Coast Salmon. We hope that you enjoy it.
