What can I say about Portland's very own
Lloyd Jones
? Last year Lloyd and his wife Cathy came as guests of Delbert, but
without the band. Lloyd sat in with Delbert and others through the trip,
adding his funky guitar and soulful singing to a great week of music. This
year, he was back with the whole band for three sets that really had people
up and moving. Another consummate entertainer (Cathy says "ham"),
Lloyd gets down and funky with a heavy dose of Memphis style horns and
organ to go with his outstanding guitar playing. He's the pride of Portland
and an all 'round cool guy . . . and I have been enjoying his music since
before I moved to Portland a dozen years ago. I can't say he was the reason
I moved here, but after hearing Lloyd and Curtis Salgado, I knew the music
scene in Portland would be to my liking. He's loved by many of the other musicians
on the cruise, particularly Delbert, Marcia Ball, and Gary Nicholson for
his tasteful licks and great voice . . . and this year he even got to do
one of his songs (Big Old Shirt) in the Songwriters
session.
